Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” This simple command requires nothing less than a profound level of obedience. It re-shapes the priorities of our lives. For the follower of Jesus, we begin to want what He wants, following him to push the message of the gospel forward, both in giving and going, and always praying. Thriving Tribes was formed to efficiently serve in reaching the least reached. After serving years in remote areas among people with little access to the gospel, we began to realize the need to help people with their physical needs. It was heart-breaking to see young and old die from lack of clean drinking water and poor sanitation. So in 2009, we began training in sustainable water well drilling. Rather than a simple handout, our drilling method requires the locals to put in “sweat equity” by doing most of the work.
The humanitarian work of Thriving Tribes is designed by workers who live in remote areas. That’s important for making sure each project is done in a way that meets real needs and empowers people in need. We want them to hear and see the gospel as we serve them. Over the past decade, projects have continually evolved to help more people in more ways. We’re still drilling wells, but also teaching sanitation, nutrition, and first aid. In Brazil, we’re helping Venezuelan refugees file paperwork, secure housing, and eat. We’ve done a fishing project, some farming projects, and paid for medical expenses for people in need. Projects are varied, as are the needs we identify. But the love of Christ compels us to love others, sharing in their burdens. And the whole process is sustained by God as he moves in the hearts of donors who share in this passion to reach the least reached with the gospel, both in word and in action.
We have very few overhead expenses. We don’t currently have any fixed staff expenses. Rather, we pay national missionaries fair wages for projects that they are qualified to direct. And that income enables him or her to continue their disciple-making ministry. So, the financial gift provides the well for the community, and provides a missionary with the income to continue sharing the gospel in-between well projects.
We count it a great honor to be involved in this process of making disciples of all nations. We’ve seen how desperate people are to hear the truth of Jesus. We love them. And we won’t stop our pursuit of taking the gospel to them, both in word and in action.
